Volumes and folders

Containers start fresh on every deploy. Anything an app must keep, such as a database's data, goes on a volume or in a folder.

Volumes

A volume is storage Layup creates and manages for a service, mounted at a path like /var/lib/postgresql/data. Volumes outlive deploys and are what app backups copy.

Removing a service from an app asks whether to delete its volumes or keep them. Kept volumes show under Server > Disk until you delete them.

Reset on a volume empties it, optionally after backing the app up.

Folders

A folder mounts a directory that already exists on the server, such as a media library at /mnt/media.

Because a folder gives containers part of the server itself, an admin decides which folders apps may mount. Under Server > Disk, add them to Folders apps may mount. A folder can then be mounted, along with anything inside it. There are none until an admin adds some.

Some folders can never be mounted, whatever is allowed: the Docker socket, Docker's and Layup's own data, and system folders such as /proc and /dev.

Folders aren't included in backups.
